In the opera rehearsal schedule, the general rehearsal, usually called ΓÇ£the generalΓÇ¥, is the final rehearsal before the first night. So-called because it has no specific purpose in rehearsing a particular element of a production. It is the last opportunity to see how the performance works as a whole, with orchestra, chorus, costumes, scenery, lighting and make-up. These days general rehearsals are often open to selected members of the public, so that audience response can be judged before the paying audience sees the show.
